The Datchworth History Book

Here's the definitive history of Datchworth - Five Hides Village - the book published in 1984 by local writers, T.O.Beachcroft and W.B.Emms.

It's sadly out of print, but this on-line version consists of digitised images of an existing paper copy.

How to view it

To get started, click the next button. It's yellow and on the left near the top. Move backwards and forwards using the prev and next buttons. To go straight to any section listed on the left, click on the item. Make the picture smaller or bigger using the pink smaller or bigger buttons repeatedly till it's the size you want.

Numbering

The little white box at the top on the left shows the current frame number. You can type any number in the range 1-265, and go straight to that frame by clicking on the frame button next to it.

Notes

It wasn't possible to use the book's original page numbering because it was irregular and didn't include diagrams. Instead, we simply give every page, from cover-to-cover, a frame number in the range 1-265. They appear here in exactly the order as the printed book.
This viewer pre-fetches the next frame while you're reading the present one, so you get an instant changeover when you click the next button.
But there are two circumstances where this pre-fetch is fooled: (1) when you jump to a frame or chapter which isn't the next frame, and (2) when you click the next button before there's been enough time to fetch the next image. When these happen you'll notice a small delay, but no worse than without pre-fetch. You can disable pre-fetch by unchecking the small pf box on the left. This also disables the animated "button-click" effect.
The small pink box (bottom left) merely shows the number of the pre-fetched frame.
The images stored on the website are highly compressed versions of the scanned documents so that they download quickly, and also to reduce the storage on the web server. The price paid for this is some loss of image quality. However, higher quality images are available. Contact the editors of www.datchworth.info.
In some browsers the shortcut keys Alt-P, Alt-N, Alt-S and Alt-B are alternatives to clicking the prev, next, smaller and bigger buttons.
